in the shadow of mt vesuvius

after spending the day amidst the ruins of Pompeii, we retreated to our hotel.  not far stood Mt Vesuvius, the great volcano that erupted thousands of years ago and destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum.  600,000 people currently live in the red zone, which means that if a small eruption happened today (which it could), they would be in danger and need to be evacuated.  you could not pay me enough money to spend my life in an active volcano zone, although the lemon trees and light ocean breezes definitely hold some appeal.
