watch: melancholia

Anna KellerComment

the other night I finally got around to watching Melancholia, the eerily beautiful story of a modern apocalypse by the Danish director Lars von Trier and starring Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg as two deeply disturbed sisters, facing the end of the world on a stunning country estate.  I had actually tried to go see the film in Amsterdam about a year ago but the helpful kid manning the ticket counter informed me that they were only showing it in Dutch.  he pointed me to the nearest theater showing films in English where I sat through utterly dull Shakespeare film that I can't even remember the name of.  I really think I would've enjoyed watching this movie instead, just watching the gorgeous cinematography and guessing at the disaster and drama that was looming over them all.

oh - and if you have Netflix, you can watch it on demand!  maybe spend a nice night on the couch with this crazy hurricane coming up the east coast this week.
