I am a snowflake lover, it's true. so true, in fact, that I have a kind of obvious tattoo on the inside of my right arm of five of Snowflake Bentley's specimens. Bentley was the first person to capture one of those magical little crystals in a photograph in 1885, and went on to photograph more than 5,000 of them during his lifetime.
today I happened upon the work of someone doing a similar sort of project but with all of the conveniences and capabilities of modern technology. Alexey Kljatov is a photographer who captures snowflakes on glass on his balcony and then captures them with a macro lens (you can read about his technique here). the effect is stunning and has an entirely different quality than the work of Mr. Bentley.
